The 36-year-old has played 19 games in his first stint in the A-League as his Sky Blues sit comfortably at the top of the table after Round 20.

Wilkshire has not played for the Socceroos since coming off the bench in a 1-1 friendly draw to South Africa in May 2014 and was not selected for the World Cup a month later by Ange Postecoglou.

A number of youngsters have been touted for World Cup selection under new boss Bert van Marwijk, but many fans also feel the veteran could make a Socceroo comeback.

Wilkshire represented the Socceroos at the 2006 and 2010 World Cups, but was being realistic about being picked up by van Marwijk.

“I’ve never closed any doors, I’ve never done that in my career at club or international level,” Wilkshire told FourFourTwo.

“I enjoy playing my football, so any opportunity I get to play, I want to grab it and enjoy it and that’s what I’ve done throughout my career.

“People talk, especially the Australian media. Daniel Arzani has played nine games and they’ve put him in the Socceroos squad. I saw Brett Holman get Man of the Match the other day and now he’s playing for Australia.

“People will talk, but things will happen and any player, you play at club level and if anything beyond that comes, then it’s a bonus.

“I’m right now focused on playing for Sydney FC, I’m playing and enjoying my football, that’s what I came back here to do. Anything that comes beyond that, who knows? I’m just enjoying my time playing.”

Sky Blues captain Alex Brosque believes a number of Sydney players could potentially be picked up by van Marwijk.

The skipper and former Socceroo feels Alex Wilkinson is also in strong contention, the centre-back has not featured for Australia since a 4-0 away World Cup Qualifier against Bangladesh in November, 2015.

Wilkinson, Zullo, O'Neill and Brillante for Socceroos too? Brosque says yes! By Sam Anfield Photography

“At the end of the day, the coach has to go to a World Cup in a few months and perform, I don’t think he’s looking at the future, he’s got to look at who’s in form,” Brosque told FourFourTwo.

“I think a lot of boys at Sydney FC can do that for him. Whoever is playing well… there are a lot of boys and not just Wilko and Lukey.

“We’ve got Josh Brillante and Brandon O’Neill in midfield, they’ve been the standout midfielders in the league for the past two years. Michael Zullo has also been fantastic.

“I think out of the sheer fact our boys are playing well, our Aussies have been the form players for their positions for the past two years. I think Bert will definitely look at that.”
