Sick of 'living out of suitcases', Socceroo looking at MLS

Socceroos defender Brad Smith just wants to settle down after years bouncing around from club to club.

The former Aussie Liverpool prodigy excelled during his short spell at Anfield with many believing he would be a massive success in the Premier League.

But after five league appearances for the English giants, Smith secured a lucrative move to then-EPL high flyers Bournemouth in the hope of establishing himself as a genuine EPL stalwart.

Socceroos forward Martin Boyle had a field day, scoring his third goal in seven Scottish Premier League matches in Hibernian's 3-0 rout of St. Mirren.

His arrival coincided largely with Bournemouth's downfall, as the club that had been celebrated for their incredible tiki-taka football and enigmatic boss Eddie Howe began to spiral down the ladder.

Bournemouth's decline, ending with their relegation last season, was partly blamed on their interest in Liverpool players like Smith. Howe brought several big-money stars from Liverpool over his spell in the EPL, all of whom failed at Dean Court.

Smith was perhaps the lowest key, only making five EPL appearances for the club. He played a successful loan spell in the MLS at Seattle Sounders and a brief spell at Cardiff, but neither ended in a permanent move.

Now clubless, Smith wants something to stick, even if it means returning to the MLS.

"(Bournemouth) has been our base, but it’s been living out of suitcases for a while," Smith explained in an interview with The Athletic.

"It was time for me to move on. It was the right time. But it’s a shame what happened, them (Cherries) going down. I really would have liked for them to have gotten to stay up, because I’ve got a lot of really good friends there. It’s just a big shame."

"It will be nice to finally settle down. I’ve been back and forth with clubs, and coming back to Bournemouth with the houses, it’s been a difficult run.

"I think the next step, when I find a new club, that will be fully settling down.

"Hopefully I move my whole family there full-time, get settled and know where I’m gonna be for the next few years. Maybe even longer."

Asked if he could return to Seattle, where he won the MLS Cup in 2019, Smith added: "I would definitely go back there if it was an option.

"But there are going to be other options in MLS, as well, so we’ll see what happens."
