"The absolute majority of our fellow citizens (91 percent) rooted for Russia throughout the World Cup. Croatia (37 percent) and France (34 percent) rounded out the top three nations supported by Russians, who took less interest in Belgium's and Brazil's players (11 percent each)," the pollster said.

According to the poll, after Russia bowed out of the tournament following a penalty shootout defeat by eventual runners-up Croatia in the quarter-finals, Russians rooted mainly for France (12 percent) and Croatia (11 percent).

"However, the majority of them (69 percent) did not root for any team after our team lost to Croatia," the pollster added.

The country-wide phone poll was conducted on Monday among 1,600 respondents aged 18 and older, with the margin of error not exceeding 2.5 percent.

The World Cup took place in 11 Russian cities from June 14 to July 15.
