Singapore-owned telco Optus has snatched up the Australian TV rights to the UEFA Champions League, Europa League and UEFA Super Cup in a major blow to Fox Sports.
As first revealed in a 442FM podcast last May, Optus snapped up the chance to snare the rights to further cement the telco's move into football broadcasting.
The Euro club competitions had previously been broadcast in Australia by BeinSport and SBS.
It now leaves Foxtel with even less football content than ever since losing the EPL to Optus in 2016 although they still have the A-League, some Socceroos games, La Liga, and Bundesliga among others shown live on the pay TV platform.
The move into the European club games follows Optus coming under fierce fire for its handling of the World Cup rights which saw the Prime Minister get involved when the telco's app failed fans.
Viewers were left hanging when the Optus app collapsed during the World Cup and forced the telco to relinquish their exclusive rights to the SBS to ensure fans didn't miss out on the action.
Today's deal starts immediately and runs for three years, kicking off with the Champions League play-offs this month and the Madrid Super Cup derby on August 17.
Announcing the deal today, Optus said it "demonstrated its commitment to becoming the home of premium football following its acquisition of Australian broadcast and transmission rights to the UEFA Champions League, the UEFA Europa League and the UEFA Super Cup for the next three years.
"This announcement means Optus Sport will now offer an enormous range of premium European football, which also includes the live Australian rights to the Premier League, UEFA Euro 2020, UEFA Nations League and UEFA Nations League Finals."
Optus Managing Director Marketing and Product Ben White added, “Adding these tournaments and elite football matches to Optus Sport provides our customers with more than double the live premium football content compared to this time last year.”
The package now means Optus will offer:-
• Premier League 2018/19 -2021/22
• FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2019 and other FIFA events
• UEFA Nations League 2018 and 2020
• UEFA Euro 2020
