Mabil, who turns 23 next week, left Adelaide after a breakout season as a winger in 2014/15 for Danish champions FC Midtjylland on a long-term deal.

The Kenya-born talent earned his first-team debut in his maiden season in Denmark but failed to lock down a regular spot with Midtjylland, leading to loan spells with Esbjerg and Pacos Ferreira over the past two seasons.

But Mabil has started this season well with parent club Midtjylland, with four appearances and a goal.

He revealed has learned from his time in Europe and evolved his game, from simply being a winger, to someone who can play numerous positions, which will aid his Socceroos prospects.

“In the A-League when I was there I was a winger,” Mabil said. “I’d stay out wide, one-on-one, dribble, that was the kind of player that I was.

“When I went to Denmark, that’s why they bought me. They bought me there to do what I was doing in Adelaide.

“I slowly started to realise that you need more than one thing to your game. When I just stayed wide, defenders in Europe could read me.

“It was about putting in the hours at the club, watching videos and trying to see where I can add on to my game.

“I think in the last year I’ve added that position of being able to play like a number 10 or a winger who comes inside to collect the ball and makes something happen from there, whether to stay wide or come inside.

“It’s been good to add those things to my game.”

Mabil has been called in Socceroos camps before yet remains uncapped but determined to realise a long-term dream since migrating to Australia in 2006.

“It’d be a dream come true,” Mabil said.

“Ever since I first came to Australia as a kid when I was 10-years-old with my family the first thing we saw was the World Cup.

“There was a commercial with the Socceroos players on the tv every day. That’s where the interest really started.

“I never knew I’d get the chance. Now there’s a chance so I have to work hard every day at my club and here. If the chance comes I’d love to represent Australia.”
