THE JOEYS have defeated Hong Kong 1-0 in their AFC U-16 Championship qualifier match at the Rajamangala Stadium in Bangkok on Saturday night.
The only goal of the match came just after the half hour mark when a corner from Reece Papadimitrios found Joeys captain Ben Warland at the far post who volleyed home his shot from around the 12 yards out for his second goal of the tournament.
The Joeys dominated for the entire match, but some dogged defending by Hong Kong in very hot and humid conditions prevented the Australians from extending their lead.
In the other Group G matches Thailand remained at the top of the table with a 4-1 victory over Myanmar 4-1 and Indonesia defeated Guam 17-0.
The Joeys will next face Guam at the Debhatsadin Stadium on Monday September 19 (kick-off 6:00pm local, 9.00pm AEST).
During the AFC U-16 Championship Qualifiers, each group will play one round league and the top two teams from each group will progress to the AFC U-16 Championship 2012.
Additionally, the third best teams from each West and East zones will complete the 16-team line up of the 2012 finals.
The AFC U-16 Championship will serve as the qualifying event for the 2013 FIFA U-17 World Cup which will be held in the United Arab Emirates in October/November.
