The result leaves Australia in third spot on goal difference behind Thailand and Indonesia in the group stage of the U16 qualifiers.

The top two teams from each group go forward along with two best placed third placed teams, one from west and one from east Asia.

But the pressure has been on the Joeys since losing their opening game against Thailand, although their victory over 197th ranked Guam has given the side fresh hope of qualifying.

Luke Stergiou opened the scoring for the Joeys early in the first half but it took until the second half for the flood gates to open.

Substitutes Taylor Tombides scored five and Josh MacDonald three with midfielder Kevin Ly also adding his name to the scoresheet just after the hour mark.

Qantas Joeys coach Jan Versleijen said he  was pleased but knows that the success of the whole campaign will come down to their final match against Indonesia.

“We started the match by playing some players who had not played much during the tournament and resting others players who had played the majority of the first three matches, including those who were sitting on yellow cards," he said.

“In the first half we were not able to finish our opportunities, but after a couple of changes at the start of the second half we played much better, found the target and could have actually scored more goals.

“We have improved as a team throughout the tournament and with this improvement I am confident that we should be able to get the result against Indonesia on Thursday to achieve our goal of qualifying for next year’s championship.”

In the other Group G matches Thailand remained at the top of the table with a 4-1 victory over Indonesia and Myanmar defeated Hong Kong 4-2.

The AFC U-16 Championship will serve as the qualifying event for the 2013 FIFA U-17 World Cup which will be held in the United Arab Emirates in October/November.
