YOUNG Socceroos and Joeys head coach Jan Versleijen is to quit the post at the end of the year when his contract expires as the FFA restructures the role after two disappointing youth World Cups.
The FFA today announced a restructure of the national youth set-up that will see the role of Head Coach of the Qantas Young Socceroos separated from the role of Head Coach of the Qantas Joeys and Australian Institute of Sport football programme.
The change comes after calls for Verselijen's head to roll following the U17s and U20s World Cups this winter.
Young Socceroos crashed out at the group stage after a dismal series of results while the Joeys were sent home at the first knockout stage after similarly underwhelming results.
Versleijen had given every sign that he intended to stay in the role but today the FFA revealed they would be splitting his job in two - and looking for applicants.
An FFA statement insisted the decision to step down at the end of the contract was Versleijen's.
"Versleijen has indicated to FFA that he will not be re-applying for any of the national youth team coaching positions once his current contract ends at the end of this calendar year," said the statement.
