On Saturday, Hernandez scored in Mexico's 2-1 defeat of South Korea to equal Luis Hernandez's record of four World Cup goals for his country. The 30-year-old West Ham United player is also Mexico's all-time top goalscorer with a total of 50 international goals.

“The scoring records are pointless if we do not advance, do not qualify [for the Round of 16] tomorrow. The important thing is not my achievement, but the team’s result at the World Cup,” Hernandez told journalists.

He added that although the team and the coaching staff were often criticized, "focusing on winning and defending his country in the tournament is more important" to him than anything else.

Mexico are currently top of Group F, which also features defending champions Germany, Sweden and South Korea, and will next face Sweden in Yekaterinburg on Wednesday.
