Edwards, a former Socceroo, was confirmed as the new Joeys coach today.

The AIS head coach role has gone to Tony Vidmar who will also assist Edwards on the bench for Joeys matches.

“For Alistair, his first KPI is the AFC U16 championships in September which act as a qualifier for the 2013 U17 World Cup [in the UAE]," Berger said today.

“And at the World Cup the KPI is at least reaching the round of 16. That’s the minimum.”

Berger added the FFA were put on the back foot by the departure from the elite development system of Gary Van Egmond.

The AIS staff coach took the Newcastle Jets A-League job last October.

But Berger said it opened up new possibilities with the new restructure also including a technical manager in Peter De Roo.

De Roo's job will be to take many of the non-coaching responsibilities off Vidmar thereby allowing him to focus on the coaching of our next generation of stars.

“Coaches in my opinion do not have enough time and focus for a number of other things around the program,” said Berger. “Peter’s role is to provide a technical and management leadership.

"There are a lot of issues surrounding the AIS program that could use more attention, like recruitment and talent ID processes and coach development.”

Berger side-stepped questions about whether deposed former Adelaide coach Rini Coolen could take over as coach of the SASI program as the successor to Vidmar.

Today a new national U22 team was also announced but the coach is yet to be named.

The Australian U22s have been drawn alongside Japan, Indonesia, Singapore, Macau and Timor Leste for the inaugural AFC U22 Asian Cup 2013 qualifiers, which will be played from June 23 to July 8 at a venue to be determined.

Meanwhile there is seemingly no rush to appoint an U20s Young Socceroos coach but Edwards is unlikely to be given the job given his son plays in the U20 squad.

The Young Roos play the AFC U19s qualifying tournament in November.
