Edgeworth are planning another epic upset after the Newcastle side downed Perth Soccer Club 1-0 in to book a spot in the NPL Australia grand final.
Edgeworth will face Sydney United 58 in the national NPL decider at Edensor Park this Sunday after they eliminated Perth SC last weeked in Western Australia.
The Eagles have notched impressive away wins against Bentleigh Greens and Perth SC already, along with Far North Queensland in the FFA Cup in Cairns, and they are eyeing one more.
“We’ll give it a good crack,” Edgeworth coach Damian Zane told FourFourTwo.
“It’s massive. It’s a massive opportunity. We’ll have the advantage of hunger and opportunity – we might not get another crack at it.”
Zane said victory over Sydney United would make 2016 the best season in Edgeworth’s history. This year the Eagles won the double in the NNSW NPL and reached the last 16 of the FFA Cup.
“It’d have to be [if we win],” Zane admitted.
“If you win the NPL Final series you’re the best team outside of professional football in Australia.”
Edgeworth got past Perth thanks to a goal from Daniel McBreen with the mentor praising former Socceroos' influence on his young team.
“It was just an unbelievable effort,” he said.
“We knew what he’d add in the big games. To go away and beat a pretty good Perth team was massive.
“The average age of our midfield is about 20, so he’s like the coach on the field. He’s helped them develop. His missus wasn’t too happy about [about this weekend’s game] because he’s supposed to be in Fiji on holiday. But he’s super keen.”
And after so much success on the road, Zane isn’t overly concerned with another away trip for his men.
However, the Edgeworth faithful are expecting to take several busloads of supporters down the M1 from Newcastle for the game.
“There’s a really good vibe in the group,” he said.
“Going away makes us more dangerous.”
