Burgess inked a three-year deal with Scunthorpe in June after coming through the ranks at Fulham’s academy.

The centre back, who grew up in Perth, departed the south-west London club in the pursuit of regular first-team football.

Burgess has previously been on loan at the likes of Oldham Athletic, Bury, Ross Country and Cheltenham Town.

The 21-year-old has already represented Australia at Under-20 and Under-23 level.

He hopes to impress in League One this season and force his way into national team calculations.

"There’s guys that have been involved and played games and have gone the same path I’m going like your Bailey Wrights, James Merediths, Luongo," he told FourFourTwo.

"Guys that have actually managed to be involved from being at a top team in this division that I’m playing in now, which is encouraging. But obviously I’ve got to wait my turn and prove that I’m good enough to get in the team.

"If you look at the last couple of years and the development that that team has made is unbelievable. I’ve got a little while to go yet I imagine but that’s definitely a goal for me and is a big part of coming to Scunthorpe.

"It’s all about playing well for your club. They’re [the Socceroos] always watching, I don’t know how they manage to watch all the games but I know they do watch a lot of games and its encouraging to see.

"They’re always watching, that’s what you have to keep at the back of your mind. If you’re doing the right things, a lot of mates of mine have gone on to get capped like Jackson Irvine."

Burgess has made two appearances for Scunthorpe so far this season, with the club undefeated after the first two rounds of league.

The Iron went close to promotion last term, finishing third on the table and then losing to Millwall in the playoffs.

Burgess said going up next year into the Championship is the target.

“The attraction firstly was the ambition of the club, it matches my ambition," he said.

"When I met the manager that’s all he talked about, to get to the next level and how we’re going to get there. I played against Scunthorpe twice with Oldham last season and they were a hard-working team, they had all the right things about them.

"Obviously they had a bad last month, conceded three penalties in the last 20 minutes against Gillingham and had some bad luck. But apart from that it’s pretty much the same team this season so hopefully can do it again.

"First and foremost I want to play games. That’s how I’m going to learn and get better."
