Burgess notched his first-ever goal in professional football, scoring in Oldham's 1-1 draw with Oxford United last weekend.

On Tuesday he powered home a header in a 3-1 win over Walsall to send the Saddlers crashing out of the Checkatrade Trophy.

The struggling Latics were defeated at home 2-0 by Southend overnight leaving them last on the table with just one home win of the season.

With that in mind Oldham are keen to keep hold of their goal scoring centre back, and according to reports have been in touch with Fulham about extending Burgess' six-month loan until the end of the season.

Burgess was delighted to open his account for Oldham, putting his side 1-0 up away from home in the first half. The ball fell perfectly for the defender to slot it into an unguarded net. It was Burgess' first goal since making his first-team debut for Fulham in 2014.

"It was a pretty special moment for me to get that first goal," he told FourFourTwo.

"I didn't quite know how to react, specially going 1-0 up away from home. It fell nicely for me to pass it in."

Burgess has had loan spells at Ross County, Cheltenham Town and now Oldham since signing for Fulham from ECU Joondalup five years ago.

The defender, who was born in Scotland but raised in WA, has played for both the Young Socceroos and Olyroos.

Burgess has been a regular for Oldham as they battle to stave off relegation, and has already racked up 27 appearances for the League One club this season.

"I'm loving the experience and learning with every miute on the pitch," he said.

"We all know how close we really are in most games and I think that's what gives us the confidence to know that we can get some good results and climb up the table."

Burgess said he was keen to keep developing his game ahead of his return to Fulham.

"For me it's all about progress and gaining as much experience as I can for my return to Fulham to hopefully earn a place in the first-team," he said.

"At the moment I'm happy to continue playing as many games as I can and I will wait and see what the plan is. I hear all the time from all the different departments [at Fulham], from physios to welfre and of course performances on the pitch, from various coaches and members of staff.

"It's good to hear feedback and know that I'm constantly under watch from staff back at Fulham."
