The dicey new Barca kit at least has some geographic significance!
FC Barcelona’s long-rumoured chequered 2019/20 home kit has finally been unveiled... but fan reaction to the ambitious jersey has been just as you might expect.
The club’s 2019/20 home strip will be without some variation of their traditional stripes for the first time in Blaugrana history, instead adopting a red and blue chequerboard pattern which is inspired by the iconic blocks of the Catalan capital’s Eixample district, famous for its charming Antoni Gaudí-designed buildings.

Next year’s home strip also features another innovation from previous seasons, with the red and yellow colours of the Catalan flag appearing at the base of the collar, rather than in its more familiar position at the back of the neck.
Having spent the majority of his youth and senior career at Barcelona (despite a stint at Manchester United between 2004 and 2008), 32-year-old star centre-back Gerard Pique defends the ambitious effort from Nike, saying: “The kit is something new and exciting.”
"It might be different but it is 100 percent Barca and it is even better that the design represents the bond the club has with the supporters and the people who are driving the city forward.”
Speaking of the club’s supporters, the comments section of the club's official kit-release tweet is, at present, an absolute gold mine for internet hilarity thanks to the seemingly unending stream of sarcastic GIFs, memes and generally witty comments about the new strip.
Here’s all the best reaction from Barcelona’s official Twitter unveiling:
