FC Barcelona’s famous ‘La Masia’ youth development academy is being honoured by the Catalan club on its 40th anniversary with the release of a commemorative away strip for the 2019/20 season.

The dominant Spanish La Liga champions have unveiled a new yellow away jersey which features a red and blue diagonal sash ending at the shirt’s yellow shoulders.

The strip features a v-neck collar and red and blue trims for the sleeve cuffs, whilst a recurring visual element of Barca jerseys, the red and yellow colours of the Catalonian flag, appears at the back of the neck, linking the iconic club back to its geographic roots.

The colour of the shorts is yet to be confirmed, with the club likely to use either yellow or a more traditional blue, which was used in 1979 when the original kit was worn, inspiring this reimagination 40 years later.

Fully titled ‘La Masia de Can Planes’, the now world-renowned youth academy started out as an old Catalan farmhouse which had been built back in 1702. FC Barcelona first began using the facility in 1979 as a location to house its youth players who had come from areas outside of Barcelona.

Incredibly, all three of the 2010 Ballon d’Or finalists (Iniesta, Messi and Xavi) were products of the academy, making La Masia the first youth academy to have trained all three Ballon d’Or finalists in a single year.
