It’s a case of one Aussie stepping in to replace another at Pohang Steelers in the looming January window, with defender Alex Grant landing a big money move to the Chinese Super League and Macarthur’s Jonathan Aspropotamitis jetting in to fill the void.
Aspropotamitis, 27, departs for South Korea on Tuesday to undergo a medical at the club which finished K League 1 runners up last season and boasts three Asian Champions League crowns.
The former Australian youth international has made nine appearances for the Bulls this season - his fifth A-League club after previous spells at Western Sydney Wanderers, Central Coast, Western United and Perth Glory.
The move offers the centre-back the chance to achieve financial security while still at the peak of his powers, though he has big shoes to fill with Grant - heading to an unnamed Chinese outfit - leaving a lasting legacy at Pohang.
The Manchester-born former Stoke City and Perth Glory stopper, 29, famously scored the goal which sealed Pohang’s spot in the 2021 ACL final and racked up 75 league appearances across three seasons.
Grant’s agent, Sydney-based Buddy Farah, declined to comment when contacted by FTBL.
