The match had appeared to be heading for extra time, with Jason Hayne's two strikes for Auckland sandwiching Mazembe goals from Ngandu Kasongo and Kilitcho Kasusula, before Van Steeden settled matters.

The Congolese side made life tough for themselves when goalkeeper Muteba Kidiaba was sent off for handling the ball outside the area after 24 minutes.

Hayne got on the scoresheet five minutes later when he got on the end of Adam Dickinson's long ball and beat substitute goalkeeper Aime Bakula.

The second half was a livelier affair and Kasongo levelled matters with a stunning 25-yard effort on the hour mark.

The 10 men of Mazembe were looking the stronger team now and took the lead seven minutes later when Kasusula latched onto Mabi Mputu's backheel to send a deflected shot past Paul Gothard.

The lead lasted barely five minutes, though, as Hayne responded quickly when Bakula blocked Grant Young's shot to fire into the roof of the net.

Kasongo and Dioko Kaluyituka missed great chances for Mazembe before Auckland snatched it four minutes into stoppage time.

Van Steeden collected a pass from Young in the box and finished coolly to win it for the part-timers.
